Our Year 1 programme for children aged 5-6 years provides a more structured approach to learning as children move beyond the early Years and begin working on a Key Stage 1-style curriculum.
Building on the foundations developed in Reception, children take part in focused lessons alongside practical, hands-on learning. We encourage children to become confident, independent learners who can apply their knowledge, solve problems and take pride in their achievements.
English
Children continue to develop their reading and writing skills through Read Write Inc. Phonics, building fluency, comprehension and confidence as readers. Writing progresses from simple sentences to more detailed independent writing, using basic grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Mathematics
Children develop their understanding of numbers, counting, addition and subtraction, shapes and measurement. They use practical activities and simple problem-solving to build confidence in using maths in everyday situations.
Wider Curriculum
Children enjoy a broad and varied curriculum that includes STEM, Art and Design, Physical Education, Music & Movement, Drama, Language and topic-based learning. Children also have regular opportunities for outdoor play, discovery time and learning through play, allowing them to explore their interests, develop creativity and build important social and problem-solving skills.
